Arrival in Santa Clara

Meet Your Personal Driver-guide
Once you have cleared immigration and collected your luggage, your private English-speaking driver-guide will meet you in the arrivals hall.
Santa Clara City Tour
Your tour begins with a guided walk through Santa Clara, a key location during the Cuban Revolution. You’ll wander its historic city center and visit several important sites related to the 1953-1959 rebellion, including the famed Che Guevara monument, museum and mausoleum complex. Che made history in this city when he and a band of 18 other revolutionaries derailed an armored train carrying 350 Batista troops and secured their surrender, a turning point in the revolution. You will visit the exact spot where these events took place.

Lunch
After the tour, it’s time to refresh and refuel at one of Santa Clara’s most popular paladares. Paladares are privately-owned restaurants and the site of some of the most interesting culinary innovation taking place in the country.

Accommodation Check-in
It’s time to check in at your accommodation, one of Santa Clara’s top-rated casas particulares handpicked by our experts. Casas particulares are privately-run guesthouses generally ran by families, offering a great insight into Cuban culture and everyday life in the city. The highlight of the casa particular experience is often the owners, who will go out of their way to make you feel at home.

Tobacco Factory
You’ll complete your tour of Santa Clara with a visit to the city’s tobacco factory, one of Cuba’s best. You’ll see how the country’s most famous brands of cigars – Montecristos. Partagás, and Romeo y Julietas – are made.
Remedios Tour
You’ll begin the day by journeying from Santa Clara to Remedios. This tranquil town obtained its charter in 1550 as Cuba’s eighth settlement, though it is thought that the Spanish colonized the town several decades before that. Today, it boasts a number of interesting colonial sites to visit, including a stunning church with 13 gold altars.
Remedios is perhaps best known for its Christmas festival, “Las Parrandas de Remedios” the largest and oldest carnival in the Caribbean. It is a time of huge community involvement both in the city itself and amongst the Cuban diaspora, who send materials for the festival’s elaborate costumes and floats. Your guide will take you to the Museum of Parrandas to see photos and artifacts related to the event.

Lunch
You’ll have another opportunity to tuck into Cuba’s diverse and tasty cuisine. Each paladar you eat at has been specially chosen by our expert travel consultants.

Caibarién
Known as “La Villa Blanca” (The White Town), Caibarién was once one of the biggest and busiest port cities in Cuba. Though it is much quieter these days, a small fishing community survives. You’ll have the opportunity to interact with this resilient community and discuss the future of the fishing industry in Cuba. Caibarién’s colorful seaside streets are also home to some notable colonial-era buildings. Though many of the oldest are crumbling, they hold a certain charm and open interesting discussions about preservation. You’ll have dinner in Caibarién before returning to your accommodation in Santa Clara.
Colonial Trinidad Tour
You’ll leave Santa Clara after breakfast and head to what is arguably Cuba’s most charming city, Trinidad.
Strolling the cobbled streets of the town center, you’ll learn about Trinidad’s colonial heyday. Your first stop is the city’s central square to visit the 18th-century Church of the Holy Trinity, home of the venerated Christ of the True Cross (1713). You’ll also visit Palacio Brunet, set on the same impressive plaza, for an insight into the life of Trinidad’s colonial elite. Once owned by a wealthy sugar baron, the building is one of Cuba’s finest mansions and today houses a vast collection of antique furniture.

Lunch
After your introduction to Trinidad’s rich history, you’ll stop for a delicious lunch at one of Cuba Direct’s favorite paladares.

Accommodation Check-in
Your driver-guide will take you to your casa particular in Trinidad for check in. The friendly owners will go out of their way to make you feel comfortable at their top-rated guesthouse.
Colonial Trinidad Tour
Your tour continues with an educational libation at Casa de la Canchanchara. Canchancharas, a basic rum-based cocktail, are thought to have been invented by Cuban guerilla fights during the 19th-century wars of independence. You’ll visit the site where Padre Bartolomé de las Casas – “Protector of the Indians” – delivered his first mass before concluding the tour at an artisan market.
