Top Tip

A Havana city tour is a great introduction to the city, and especially fun in an Old American car. Havana can be hectic and sometimes finding the best places (particularly restaurants and bars) is not easy if you don’t know your way around, especially as public transport is limited. By taking a city tour, you get a sense of the different areas and distances, which will help you get the most out of your stay.

My Favorite Destination

The Viñales Valley. It is so unique; it doesn’t look like anywhere else in the Caribbean. A protected natural paradise, it’s breathtaking, and can be as relaxing or adventurous as you want it to be. There are lots of outdoor activities available, like horseback riding which is my favorite thing to do there.

My Best Experience

After around 40 visits to Cuba over the years, it is hard to pick just one favorite experience. However, a spontaneous salsa party on the streets of Santiago de Cuba is a memory that will stay with me forever. This part of the island has a rich culture as it once was the capital and its music scene is very lively. However, in recent years it was affected by hurricanes making it less visited by tourists. The locals still keep their spirits up and are always positive. I remember how engaging people were and how I ended up dancing with friendly strangers until really late at night, drinking rum, and being part of a party where I was the only foreigner in the group. I couldn’t compete with such great dancers but it was really fun.
