Top Tip

Though it may be tempting to stay outside, soaking up the sights and sounds, don’t miss out Cuba’s museums from your trip. Havana has a particularly good and diverse collection, covering topics that range from revolution to rum. My favorite is the National Museum of Fine Arts, particularly the Cuban art collection. The museums not only provide an insight into the island’s history and culture but can provide welcome respite from the afternoon heat.

My Favorite Destination

For me, it’s toss-up between Havana and Santiago de Cuba. They’re both large energetic cities with heaps of culture on offer but sit at opposite ends of the country. Santiago de Cuba is actually closer to Haiti than Havana and has a strong Afro-Caribbean influence, along with the dramatic backdrop of the Sierra Maestro Mountains. Havana is iconic, and rightly so. The architecture and array of sites on offer is unmatched elsewhere in the region.

My Best Experience

Becoming a local. I fell in love with Cuba and more importantly, a Cuban woman, which culminated in the best decision I ever made: moving here permanently. I had been visiting Cuba for many years and have had countless wonderful experiences, but the most special (after meeting my wife!) has been the slow transition from Brit to Habanero. I’ve found the Cuban people to be exceptionally welcoming.
